China suspends misleading TV ad shows 2010-01-07 13:38:42 | Source A crackdown on misleading advertising in China has led to the suspension of television shows that promote products about breast enlargement, weight loss and increasing of height. A government directive this week ordered all broadcasters to stop showing such programs from next month "until further notice". Many of these advertising TV programs, shown in the form of health seminars, have medical experts or current users recommending certain products which exaggerate their functions and effects, the directive said. "These problems have hurt consumers' legal rights and have damaged the credibility of broadcast television and the media," said the directive, which was posted on the State Administration for Industry and Commerce's website on Wednesday. The notice ordered officials to review all their programs and advertisements, adding that they would face punishment for any breaches. The move came three months after the Chinese government banned a gel used for breast enlargements after hundreds of women injected with the fluid reported suffering severe pain, vision impairment and other health problems. More than 300 000 Chinese women have been injected with the so-called "magic liquid" in the past five years, a medic at the Peking Union Hospital estimated in May.
